Most certifications are pay-to-play marketing. These three are not:

• EPA Safer Choice — the EPA reviews every ingredient against a hazard list. Strict, public, free to verify on the EPA's website.
• Green Seal — third-party, independent, requires manufacturers to prove environmental performance, not just substitute one bad ingredient for another.
• EWG Verified — the Environmental Working Group's mark, which prohibits a long list of ingredients of concern.

If a product carries one of those marks, it's been audited. If a product is "all natural" with no certification, that's a marketing claim, not a verified one.

• "Natural" — unregulated. A petroleum-derived solvent is technically "natural" — petroleum comes out of the ground.
• "Non-toxic" — unregulated unless paired with a specific certification. A product can be non-toxic at one concentration and toxic at another.
• "Plant-based" — partially true at best. Many products are 95% water + plant-based surfactant + a synthetic preservative.
• "Hypoallergenic" — has no FDA definition for cleaning products.
• "Eco-friendly" by itself — meaningless without a certification or specific commitments behind it.

If you're trying to clean greener at home, the highest-impact swaps are:

• Anything labeled just "fragrance" or "parfum" — that single word can hide dozens of undisclosed compounds, including phthalates.
• Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs / "quats") — common in disinfecting wipes; linked to asthma and skin sensitization with daily exposure.
• Sodium hypochlorite (bleach) in everyday cleaning — it has its place for actual disinfection, but it doesn't belong in routine cleaning of countertops or floors, especially with kids and pets in the home.
• 2-Butoxyethanol — common in glass and all-purpose sprays; respiratory irritant.
• Triclosan — banned from hand soap by the FDA but still creeps into some "antibacterial" cleaners.

If eco-friendly matters to you, ask these questions before booking any cleaning service in the Austin area:

1. What products do you use? A real answer names brands. A vague answer is a flag.
2. Are any of those products third-party certified? EPA Safer Choice, Green Seal, or EWG Verified are the answers you want.
3. What do you use for disinfection? Hydrogen peroxide and citric acid are EPA-registered disinfectants and far less harsh than quats or bleach.
4. Do you use HEPA-filtered vacuums? Standard vacuums recirculate fine dust — and Austin pollen is one of the worst things to recirculate.
5. Microfiber or paper towels? Microfiber is reusable, more effective for fine dust, and produces no waste stream.
6. Can you accommodate fragrance-free? Most reputable services can, especially for asthma or chemical-sensitivity clients.

For routine cleaning — kitchens, bathrooms, floors, surfaces — yes. The chemistry of dirt removal doesn't require harsh ingredients; it requires a surfactant, agitation, and time. Where conventional products win is brute-force stain removal (set-in mildew, deep grease) and hospital-grade disinfection. For everything else, a third-party-certified product cleans just as effectively.

In Austin specifically, the one place we make a chemistry-based exception is hard-water mineral buildup in showers. White vinegar and citric-acid products handle most of it, but for stubborn deposits we may use a stronger acid-based product on a one-time basis — and only on the affected area.

Is eco-friendly cleaning more expensive? Not meaningfully. Certified products cost slightly more per bottle, but services that have invested in good practices usually charge the same as conventional services.

Will my home smell "clean" after an eco-friendly clean? It will smell like nothing, which is what "clean" actually smells like. The lemon-pine-bleach smell most people associate with "clean" is fragrance, not cleanliness.

Are eco-friendly products safe around pets and kids? Generally yes — that's a major reason households choose them. Always confirm with the specific product if you have a pet with respiratory sensitivity.

Can eco-friendly products disinfect? Yes. Hydrogen-peroxide-based and citric-acid-based disinfectants are EPA-registered and effective against the same pathogens as quats and bleach.
